The Veritas World Junior has added an acronym and increased name recognition prior to this year’s activites, set for July 19-26.
Veritas recently signed a long term agreement with the AAU and has financial support from the Anaheim, Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau to use AAU Junior Olympic Games Golf Championship as its official moniker.
“The Junior Olympic brand has strong appeal, particularly with international athletes now that golf is re-entering the Olympics in 2016,” said Robert Brown, who spearheaded an effort to start Veritas in 2012. “We wanted to create an opportunity for a lot of kids to get exposed to high-level golf on an international level. And we’re slowing getting there.”
The Veritas event, with registration beginning the day after the end of the Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego, had 275 participants its first year and 370 in 2013. Brown is confident the number will again rise this year, and his dream is to one day attract 10,000 players and have 50 Southland golf courses involved.
“My real mission is to bring the entire golf industry together,” he said. “There are so many kids who are really good players but don’t have the finances or means to play in big events. As an industry, we need to be more encouraging.”
As with the first two years, Tustin Ranch Golf Club and Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena will be the sites for the three days of golf with age divisions for boys and girls from 6-18. The opening ceremony is July 19th at Angel Stadium of Anaheim prior to a game between the Angels and Oakland A’s. A medal award ceremony will be held July 25th at Downtown Disney in Anaheim. Veritas has also partnered with Get Travel to help families with travel or lodging questions.
